Friends,
Twelve years ago today, a Supreme Court decision forever changed the balance of power in the United States.
The decision in Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission enabled corporations and other outside groups to spend unlimited funds on elections.
Since then, big money has absolutely flooded American electoral politics. According to Public Citizen, corporations spent half a billion dollars on influencing elections in the first ten years of Citizens United alone. On top of that, just twenty-five ultra-rich Americans spent a combined $1.4 billion on influencing elections between 2010 and 2020. Thanks to Citizens United, we don’t even know who these people are.
Thanks to Citizens United , most of the money influencing our elections now comes from super PACs and other dark money groups that don’t have to disclose their donors.
Here on Team Cicilline, we rely on you, our grassroots supporters — not billionaire donors and corporate PACs. We’re proud to share that so far in 2022, our average donation is just $20.98. [[link removed]]
DONATE $20.98 [[link removed]]But we know that our opponents can’t say the same — corporations and dark money donors are filling the pockets of Republicans across the country as we speak.
That's why David is proud to be the lead sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act in the House. This Act will combat the flood of anonymous special interest spending in American politics by requiring organizations spending money in federal elections to disclose their donors.
Will you support David in his fight against big money in politics by making a donation of $20.98 or whatever you can afford to David Cicilline today, team? We count on grassroots supporters like you, not corporate PACs, to keep David fighting for us in Washington. [[link removed]]
DONATE $20.98 [[link removed]]In a midterm election year as competitive as 2022, we need all of our grassroots supporters to step up and help us fight back against corporate interests. Our democracy depends on it.
— Team Cicilline
