These stories out of North Dakota are another example of the power that fossil fuel forces still hold throughout the U.S.
John,
Last year at the United Nations Climate Summit in Glasgow, it was declared that “the end of coal was in sight” as over 40 countries pledged to phase out coal. But as our country implements measures to boost renewable energy programs, conservative state politicians are doing everything they can to prop up coal.
The same conservative politicians that tout the importance of the free market are putting their thumbs on the scale to protect coal power plants, even after they’re no longer economically viable.
Take North Dakota for example. North Dakota is in a region of the country with some of the strongest winds. It’s in a perfect spot to take full advantage of the renewables revolution. Many farmers there are more than willing to sign wind power leases to harvest this renewable energy commodity. Yet the elected officials are stubbornly denying this opportunity for North Dakotans.
During a local government meeting discussing a coal plant’s imminent closure, North Dakota's elected state’s attorney Ladd Erickson showed up and vocally supported keeping the plant alive and voiced his opposition to bringing wind power to the state.
He brashly called the failing coal plant “the most energy-efficient, environmentally friendly lignite coal plant in the entire country” and stated in an email that state attorneys may need to “nuke” all wind power leases by making them worthless through their ordinance powers in order to prop up coal.
While these poorly hidden and desperate attempts to stop clean energy development are malicious, tactics like zoning ordinances and moratoriums are completely legal. These are the sorts of tools that supposedly pro-free market conservative politicians are using across the country to keep a dying industry alive.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
