Today, the EVEST Act passed the House of Representatives. This comprehensive package would automatically enroll all returning troops into VA healthcare. The VA system is essential in ensuring that our veterans can receive the healthcare they need when returning from service. Let’s look at some numbers: Between 2001 and 2015, 62% of Veterans utilized VA Healthcare. Of them 62.3% report musculoskeletal ailments, 58.7% have unexplained ailment and 58.1% have a mental disorder. 22 veterans die every day by suicide. About 200,000 troops return to private life annually.

I’m in favor of using common sense. More veteran access to quality healthcare means more treatment. More treatment means veterans can better re-assimilate into the community. It baffles me that anyone would vote against a package that aims to improve quality of life for our American Heroes at home and abroad.

So, when I read this morning that Andy Harris voted no, I thought this must be a typo! Harris is both a doctor and a reservist, so he must have the medical interest of veterans at the forefront of his mind. But no. Harris is not in favor of ensuring a smooth transition from active duty to the next phase of one’s life. His decision baffles me. Not only did he vote against common-sense medical legislation as a doctor, but he voted not to help our veterans as a reservist.

My family is a national security family. I am appalled by “not-my-problem” Andy’s lackadaisical attitude towards our troops. This vote is Congressional negligence at best and willful neglect at worst. Andy Harris needs to go; the First District is in need of leadership and I’m the guy to bring it. Join me as we build a better tomorrow, for our troops and everyone else.
