Dear John,

I promised I would run this race with transparency and integrity.

I’ve been forthcoming about my struggles with student debt, my working-class background, and my previous experience working as a stripper.

I knew I would face backlash and stigma, but I wasn’t expecting to be removed from coaching my two soccer teams.

When the club directors sat me down to discuss both my demotion and their concerns about my public discourse on sex work, I knew I was facing discrimination and bigotry. Bigotry and discrimination hurt, but what hurt the most was losing my players.

I liken my experiences with trauma to kintsukuroi – the art of repairing pottery with gold and understanding that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken. I should not have to live in a society that celebrates breaking me. I should not have to live in a society that demotes and stigmatizes me for choosing to stand with some of the most marginalized. For the record, I’m nothing like kintsukuroi.

I am not filled with gold; I am filled with fire.

But this is only the beginning of the fight, I’m preparing for what’s to come. I remain fearless as I know this is only the beginning.
