Dear Friends,

As you may know, Critical Resistance is in an exciting period of growth! As a testament to the powerful organizing, victories, and movement building of the last 20 years, we are continuing to see an upsurge in abolitionist resistance to the prison industrial complex (PIC). To meet the demands of our growing organizing and movement, we have added five new staff positions this year at CR! Meet the newest team members below (full list at bottom), and feel free to reach out to them directly to welcome them in their new roles.

This growth is not possible without your continued commitment to CR. We want to express deep appreciation for the resources and donations you all have contributed to us since we initiated this expansion in 2016. Excited? Committed? Make a gift to support abolitionist organizing today ([link removed]) . Every penny helps chip away at the PIC.

Onward,
Critical Resistance staff

Jamani Montague - National Membership Coordinator

My name is Jamani Montague and in October 2019, I stepped into the role of National Membership Coordinator with Critical Resistance. In my role, I’ll be supporting healthy member, volunteer and partner engagement, recruitment and onboarding, political education, and skill-building & leadership development across each of our chapters. I am excited to work alongside the amazing leadership of Critical Resistance’s volunteer-membership base, continuing sharpening our political ideology, engaging new folks in our abolitionist organizing work, and developing new language and alternative resources to what’s offered by the state.

Shirley Leslie - National Development Coordinator

My name is Shirley Leslie, and I’m thrilled and honored to be joining Critical Resistance as the National Development Coordinator. I have just officially begun my work in this position, and I’m sincerely looking forward to contributing to such a pioneer organization in the fight for abolition. I’m truly excited for this new journey and for the opportunity to contribute to the fight toward abolition fostered by the firebrands before me. This is such a strong community of people firmly dedicated to theory and practice, and I’m so grateful to be a part of that community.

Kaiden Roberts - Oakland Organizer

I am really excited to be stepping into the staff role of Oakland Organizer, supporting CR’s work here in the Bay Area. Over the years, I have done work to build strong Black and queer communities as a student organizer while at university, joined the fight for environmental justice in my home states of Louisiana and Mississippi on the Gulf Coast with the Gulf South Rising Initative, advanced the cultural work of uprooting oppressions as a program facilitator and member of AlternateRoots, and built community assemblies across the southern U.S. as a member of the Southern Movement Assembly.

Scott Chillberg - Operations Assistant
I am really excited to have joined staff in the role of Operations Assistant in August this year to support CR’s work nationally. I've been connected to CR through participating in the No New San Francisco Jail coalition's ([link removed]) campaign to shut down 850 Bryant over the past year, and am thrilled to get more involved in this amazing network of abolitionist organizers. I worked at TGI Justice Project for the past two years as an executive assistant, where I learned a lot about different strategies in the fight to shrink carceral systems in the Bay Area and am really looking forward to continuing to learn and contribute to this important work.
