Friend,
When Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and
James Madison negotiated the establishment of our nation's capital --
yes, like that scene from Hamilton -- they never could have imagined
that a remote area on the Potomac would be home to 700,000 Americans.
More people live in Washington, D.C. than live in Vermont and Wyoming,
but imagine telling every tax-paying Vermonter and
Wyomingite that they suddenly have no voting
power.
Taxation without representation didn’t end
when our founding fathers dumped tea into the Boston Harbor, because
Washington, D.C. residents pay taxes but have no
representation in government. But
we’re closer than ever to righting this historic wrong, and we need
your help to build public support for D.C. statehood. Will you sign
today?

After the Civil War, formerly-enslaved
Americans fled to D.C. and the district soon became the blackest city
in America. When racist members of Congress denied suffrage to D.C.
residents, they did so explicitly as a means of suppressing black
voters. To this day, D.C. remains a majority-minority city, which is
why many have called the fight for statehood one of the top civil
rights struggles of our time. So
if you’re serious about ending voter suppression, you can show it by
supporting D.C. statehood!
The good
news is, we’re making some real progress. In September, my
colleagues held the first hearing on D.C. Statehood in
over 25 years, and more and more Democrats, including myself,
overwhelmingly support ending this injustice once and for all.

state!
Best, Ted
