Dear John,

Last night, the Senate voted against changing its rules to allow the Freedom to Vote: John Lewis Act to proceed to a majority vote. If the vote had passed, this critical voting rights legislation — the focus of intense efforts by elected officials and activists for over a year — would have been signed into law, and it would have stopped the coordinated election sabotage scheme in its tracks.

Last night’s outcome is a setback in our fight for voting rights — especially in communities of color who bear the brunt of state voter suppression laws. And the Senate vote is deeply frustrating to anyone who cares about preserving our precious right to vote and protecting our democracy.

But rest assured — the fight is not over.

We’re continuing the fight for voting rights on multiple fronts. The Brennan Center and our allies will challenge anti-democratic state laws in court. We will accelerate our efforts to hold state officials accountable and protect voting access like we’ve done in Texas. We are fighting against partisan gerrymandering to ensure communities of color have fair representation. And we will continue to work towards federal legislation to defend our democracy against Donald Trump’s Big Lie.

Failure is not an option. We must double down and do the work — at the local, state, and federal level — to save our democracy. We must protect against phony audits, threats against election officials, and racial discrimination in access to voting. But the fight for voting rights and democracy is everyone’s fight — and we need you with us.

While we litigate against the wave of voter suppression laws in the courts, we need you to advocate more than ever in your communities. Continue to write and call your elected officials. Continue to attend local hearings, election board meetings, and marches. Continue volunteering in elections and support the hardworking election officials who are facing attack. And most importantly vote — and encourage others to get involved.

We are profoundly grateful to you for all that you do. Please take a look at other ways you can help protect voting rights and our elections.

Sincerely,

The Brennan Center for Justice
