I am so proud to represent Long Islanders and advocate for the issues that affect our communities every day, from auto safety to childcare costs to infrastructure. Today, I want to talk to you about another issue on my radar as we approach the crucial midterm elections: the coordinated effort by extremists across our country to restrict and even eliminate abortion access.

Make no mistake: Every woman is entitled to make her own choices about her body. If she is pregnant and, for whatever reason, cannot bring the pregnancy to term, that is her decision to make, in consultation with her family and medical professionals. She doesn’t owe anybody an explanation, least of all politicians. That’s the law of the land, established by the Supreme Court in its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

But if Republicans take back control of the House in 2022, they will do everything they can to ban abortion at a federal level — and thanks to Donald Trump’s far-right Supreme Court, they will be able to overturn Roe v. Wade.

It is absolutely critical that we protect and expand our Democratic majority in Congress so we can do whatever it takes to defend Roe v. Wade and reproductive rights.
