I'm proud to announce a major victory on student loan reform.
Sallie Mae spin-off and corporate giant, Navient, pushed student loan borrowers into forbearance — an option that was good for their corporate bottom line — instead of income-based repayment plans, which were best for students.
I took them to court and a Washington state judge ruled that Navient broke the law.
Now, Navient is erasing the loans of 1,400 Washingtonians and paying $45 million in debt relief and restitution.
I was the first state Attorney General to file a lawsuit against Navient — but this victory will be felt nationwide as Navient cancels $1.7 billion in loan debt for students across the country and makes important corporate reforms to end its deceptive practices.
This is the end of our lawsuit against Navient, but my commitment to student loan reform will continue.
I will hold corporations and powerful special interests accountable for their actions.
Thank you,
Bob
This case is just one of the big fights Bob and his team take on to protect Washingtonians and defend our values. We have big priorities for 2022, but we want to know: what’s most important to you this year?
