Jack, the late Congressman John Lewis would often say “If you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something about it.”
48 Democratic senators got into good trouble this week. Those senators who bucked Senate norms and customs, were willing to carve-out the filibuster, a Jim Crow relic of the past, in pursuit of the freedom to vote for millions of people.

For the past year we’ve seen something not right, not fair and not just in American society. The attacks we have seen on American democracy by governors and state legislatures in certain states is reminiscent of the time period when people of color were barred from voting by being given impossible questions to answer.
History will reflect that a person’s fundamental and basic right to vote was defeated this week because two Democratic senators put political pressure over American principles.
However, 48 brave men and women stood strong as they stood in the spirit and essence of Congressman John Lewis, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Medger Evers, fighting with all they had to maintain the heart and soul of America.
We must continue to find a way to get into good trouble, necessary trouble. In the spirit of Congressmen Lewis, it’s necessary that we must continue to identify ways to protect and defend the right to vote. We must continuously support those who are willing to buck tradition and do the right thing. Let’s let those 48 senators who did what was right for democracy know that we appreciate their efforts and their support for the freedom to vote.
