Friend, Wednesday night, two United States senators put principle before party. In an act of great political courage, Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema bucked the White House and the Senate Democratic leadership to protect the filibuster, an essential tool in protecting the rights of the minority party in the chamber and ensuring that major legislative initiatives have bipartisan support. The elimination of the filibuster on legislative bills would doom any prospects of two-party solutions, and turn our election process into one that is even more toxic and destructive. Any hope of unifying the nation would become impossible. |

Senator Manchin has been eloquent and consistent in pointing out that the filibuster protects the rights of the minority party and encourages the creation of two-party solutions. He also has warned that making wholly partisan changes in our election laws would lead to another round of recriminations on both sides. Senator Sinema said she feared radical swings in policy every time party control changes and the need to proceed in a manner that encourages the search for common ground. For these stances, Manchin and Sinema are taking hits from their colleagues and the far left – hits they knew would come their way. Both senators have been targets before, as personal attacks and angry invective have become the norm in American politics, the weapons of choice for both the right and the left. Take a look at the video we made expressing this point of view, and please share it on social media. |
