Get to know Doorways' executive team!
Welcome Back Melissa Kenney
We are excited to announce that Melissa Kenney rejoined the Doorways team this week as our new Director of Operations! Some of you are familiar with Melissa as she has been connected to Doorways for several years in different roles:

  • Melissa started at Doorways as a shelter coverage and children's volunteer, logging more than 350 hours in three years.
  • As Volunteer Resource Manager, Melissa implemented Doorways' sexual assault response program, now called HARP (Hospital Accompaniment Response Program).
  • She was recognized with the 2017 Volunteer Arlington Leadership Legacy Award for her service.
  • Most recently, Melissa has supported Doorways' finance team and the volunteer program as a consultant, providing critical coverage during transitions and audits.

As Director of Operations, Melissa will ensure our mission-focused, client-centered approach utilizes resources efficiently, including outstanding management of our valued volunteers, space, and facility infrastructure. As part of the Executive Team, Melissa will collaborate with all peers as a key contributor as we chart our path to the future. Welcome back, Melissa!

Deliver urgently needed supplies
Swing by our office on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to drop off items, or purchase items from our Amazon wish list and ship them directly to our offices. This week, our most urgent needs are:
  • Paper Towels
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Tall Kitchen Trash Bags
  • Disinfectant Wipes

"It really is about affordable housing and wages."
Northam awards $8.2 million to combat homelessness in Virginia
"We have made historic investments in the Virginia Housing Trust Fund at a time when the importance of affordable housing has never been more evident," said Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam.
"We know that minimum wage increases are as crucial as ever in the current context—to protect low-wage workers from exploitation and continue toward the goal of a living wage for all workers."
Minimum Wage
On January 1st, minimum wages went up in 21 states, including Virginia! Virginia's increase is the result of legislation passed by lawmakers. We are grateful for our elected officials, and to all those advocating and voting, for making this progress possible!
And there is still work to do. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, our region's 2021 housing wage for a one-bedroom apartment was $29.77, nearly triple the new minimum wage of $11.
