John,
The heart of our democracy is the right to vote, but last night, not a single Republican Senator voted for a bill meant to defend and expand Americans’ voting rights. That’s pathetic.
Voting shouldn’t be a partisan issue, but over the years, the GOP has revealed they have no interest in making it easier for people to vote if it may result in more votes for Democrats.
In fact, they’ve gone out of their way to make voting harder by purging voter rolls, passing restrictive voter ID laws, closing down polling places, limiting ballot drop-boxes, and drawing highly partisan district maps to make it easier for them to win elections. Pennsylvania’s GOP-majority state legislature has been at it for years.
And yesterday, the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act — which would help stop these attacks on voting rights by making Election Day a national holiday, establishing same-day voter registration in all 50 states, expanding vote-by-mail, and finally banning partisan gerrymandering — was blocked in the Senate by a 50-50 vote across party lines.
As a combat veteran and as an American, this news is insulting and frankly, scary. We desperately need to stop the erosion of our voting rights and democracy at the hands of an increasingly extreme Republican Party, and we need more bold Democrats in office willing to do what it takes to make it happen.
My opponent Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick voted against this bill in the House. With your support today, I can replace him in November and give it everything I’ve got to protect our democracy in Congress.
Please, if you can, chip in $5, $10, $25, or whatever you can afford to help send me to Washington to fight for Pennsylvanians’ and every American’s right to vote.
