Our voting rights are under attack, John.
Right now, a number of progressive voices, including Jamaal, are holding the line and fighting back against the blatant attack on our democracy, our voting rights, and our voices.
Activists, peaceful protestors, and progressive leaders have rooted themselves on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, hunger striking in a display of civil disobedience. And just a few moments ago, Jamaal was arrested while protesting in support of our voting rights, alongside twenty other faith leaders and youth protesters.
In 19 states in our country, our leadership has moved to pass some of the most restrictive voting rights laws we've seen since the Jim Crow era. From a myriad of voter suppression obstacles created to deter voters to the removal of all ballot boxes, these moves are deceptive, calculated, and intentional in stopping our collective voter power.
We've been fighting for voting rights for decades, John — and yet, history continues to repeat itself. And Congress will continue to remain an institution that upholds white supremacy and historic injustice unless we relentlessly exercise our collective power. Congress must work for the people, not the other way around.
We must continue to come together as a movement to hold our leaders accountable for their part in obstructing justice. From Republicans across the aisle to conservative Democrats who hold up our path to progress, we need to demand justice and accountability for those who have been left without a voice for far too long.
Today only further proves that Jamaal, along with many of his colleagues, are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our collective democracy is protected and the calls of the people are answered.
