Republicans are systematically obstructing our access to the ballot box and opposing legislation to protect the right to vote because they know that voting advances change. We encourage you to reach out to your loved ones and ensure they are registered to vote and push for public support of the John R Lewis Voting Rights Act still struggling to find passage in Congress.

Measure P helps ensure that all neighborhoods through Fresno receive funding to improve parks and trails and fund recreational activities. It will also allow parks to be created in high-needs neighborhoods.

As progressives, we Democrats have a tendency to never be satisfied because things can always be improved upon. However, from time to time we have to take a moment to reflect on what we have accomplished. The year 2021 was one of historic job growth.

Since President Biden took office with a Democratic Congress, the unemployment rate has dropped to 3.9%, the largest calendar year decrease in history and the lowest rate since the pandemic began. The United States added 199,000 jobs in December, bringing the total for 2021 to 6.4 million jobs.

The Democratic-led Department of Labor is even looking beyond our borders. To uphold our commitment to safeguard dignity at work, at home and abroad, the Biden administration is providing more than $22 million in grants, including $8.4 million to address unacceptable working conditions in Central America and $14 million for two projects combating child labor, forced labor and human trafficking worldwide.

Our Valley’s Place in the Climate Catastrophe

Ecosystems of the San Joaquin Valley are among the most degraded in California. Originally a humid region with ephemeral rivers and lakes, the San Joaquin Valley has lost 95% of its original wetlands. Most current agricultural practices compete with ecosystems for water access, and often the San Joaquin River runs nearly dry during the summer due to upstream diversions.

Agriculture is the main economic activity of the San Joaquin Valley, and it is by far the most profitable agricultural region in the United States. Some of the most economically valuable commodities are threatened by some early climate change effects, including reduced chill hours, water scarcity and extreme heat.

Small farmers, including disadvantaged and minority farmers, are among the most impacted by climate extremes in part because of their limited resources to build the needed resilience.

Current headline debates like the quarrel over rooftop solar construction requirements and installation subsidies for housing are misaimed. In California, businesses and industry use far more electricity than residences and are generally far more suited to rooftop installation than residential designs. The broad flat roofs that characterize Californian shopping centers and industrial sites are much better sites.

The vast majority of California energy still comes from carbon fuels. This is something we cannot survive. It is life or death for us to eliminate carbon fuel sources wherever we can and switch everything to non-carbon electricity. This is not just a matter of individual choice, or even a state or national issue. This is a crisis our entire human race is facing at once, and every single one of us is responsible for solving it.

With the new strain still surging, California is extending the mandatehttps://ktla.com/news/california/california-reimposing-indoor-mask-mandate-amid-sharp-increase-in-covid-cases/that masks be worn in all indoor public settings—regardless of Covid-19 vaccination status—through Feb. 15.

Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said, “Frankly, hospital capacity is still pressed and challenged. We see that in parts of Southern California, Riverside, San Bernardino, Mono, Inyo County, we see it around the Central Valley and San Joaquin Valley, and in the northernmost parts of our state.”

“Even a 10% increase in indoor masking can reduce case transmission significantly,” Ghaly said.

The Omicron variant’s sometimes lighter symptoms are not a reason to reduce our individual precautions and level of care. We have learned how to do this, we all have practice. Wear a mask when sharing indoor space with others, especially when partaking in some activity that involves close proximity or heavy breathing like exercise or singing.

When reasonable, reduce the amount of time you spend in such environments, and be mindful of the total number of new people you expose yourself to. If you feel yourself getting sick, or know you have been exposed to someone with Covid, double up your precautions to be sure. Fabric masks, rather than a surgical or medical one, need to be sufficiently thick and tightly woven to not let light pass through it when held up to a light source.

These practices are not just to keep you safe but also to keep others safe. This wave will pass like all the others, but in the meantime it is our individual duty to limit opportunities for the virus.

If there’s an outbreak at work, employers in California now need to make FDA-approved Covid tests available to exposed employees at no cost, during paid time—and now that also goes for vaccinated, asymptomatic workers who were exposed. Tests can no longer be self-administered and self-read. In other words, workers can’t take a test at home by themselves. Tests that are processed by a lab, or observed by a medical professional during a telehealth appointment, or administered and observed by medical professionals or an employer are still okay.
