Late last night, 52 Senators voted to uphold the Jim Crow-era filibuster — a procedural rule that’s been used to hinder progress and the advancement of civil rights.
The Senate had the chance to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act and defend equal access to the ballot box against unhinged partisan attacks. But they squandered that opportunity, and our democracy will be worse for it.
I’m disappointed. I hoped that just days after we honored the life and legacy of Dr. King, we could defend one of the ideals he worked so hard for — voting rights protections that we are in desperate need of while Republican-led state legislatures pass bill after bill restricting access to the ballot box and making it more difficult to vote.
But last night does not mark the end of our journey. I’ve never stood down in the fight for what’s right before, and I certainly won’t now.
If we keep organizing, we can build even more grassroots power — whose demands can no longer be denied by Joe Manchin or Kyrsten Sinema or the entire GOP Senate Caucus who are standing in the way of progress.
