John,

We were disappointed that the vote to reform Senate rules in order to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act did not succeed yesterday. But our work to protect our democracy by ending Republican gerrymandering and fighting voter suppression will go on -- and we will fight as fiercely as ever.

While this federal legislation would have added critical tools to our toolbox, our strategy has always relied on a comprehensive approach. More than four years ago we set out to make redistricting fair by organizing state by state -- that’s exactly what we did, and that strategy is paying off. In states as diverse as Colorado, California, Michigan, and Ohio, we’re seeing the positive results of our work to fight for fair maps.

Our movement has effectively denied Republicans the ability to take the U.S. House from gerrymandering alone. So while the success of our mission has never depended on Washington, we are sure to see our movement’s impact in Washington throughout the next decade.

There’s so much still to do, from preventing gerrymanders in more states, to our affiliates’ work to support voters who sue over unfair maps, to holding map manipulators accountable at the ballot box. We need your support as much as ever -- more than ever -- to get it done.

And we can promise you this: We will continue to fight for democracy reform at every opportunity, whether it’s on the federal level, in the states, or locally.

We deeply appreciate your commitment to this fight.

In gratitude,
Team NDRC
