Dear John,

For six years now the federal government has repeated the claim that it lowered personal income taxes for the middle class.

But it is true?

A new Fraser Institute study out today finds that not only is it not true, it is the opposite of true: the government has in fact increased the personal income tax burden on most middle-class families!

It is true that in 2015, the government reduced the second-lowest personal income tax rate.

But they also scrapped income-splitting for couples with young children and eliminated a series of tax credits, which more than offset the savings from the tax rate reduction.

As a result, 86% of middle-class families have since experienced an increase in their federal personal income tax burden!
