Gov. Sets a New Low with MLK and McGirt Comments
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, JANUARY 18, 2022 – The Oklahoma Democratic Party condemns the governor’s recent comments that Martin Luther King Jr. would be “disgusted” by the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt ruling. His out-of-touch comments only demonstrate how much Stitt does not understand what Dr. King truly stood for and the civil rights issues marginalized communities face even now.
“It is beyond belief that Stitt attempted to use Dr. King’s platform to bash the McGirt ruling,” stated Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. “Such exploitation of an honored civil rights leader for the purpose of self-absorption on a day of remembrance is unconscionable.
Nothing More than a Photo Op and Student Exploitation
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, JANUARY 14, 2022 – After Education Secretary Ryan Walters made disparaging comments blaming schools for closing due to COVID issues, he pretends to step in as an “acting” substitute teacher for a two-hour photo op.
“I’m just shaking my head,” commented Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. “Walters is invited to ‘sub’ at a hand-picked charter school by one of his campaign donors to demonstrate that he gets what teachers and students face with COVID infections and critical staff shortages?” Read more...
Education Secretary Hides Head in the Sand – Ignores COVID Omicron Threat to Students
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, JANUARY 14, 2022 – Stitt’s Education Secretary, Ryan Walters’ comments about school closures due to COVID are insensitive and entirely out of touch with what students, teachers, and administrations are facing with drastically increased COVID cases and reduced staff.
“How can someone responsible for overseeing the quality of our education system demonstrate such a level of disconnect and lack of compassion from what our schools are facing. Our vulnerable children are exposed to this aggressive virus without a mask mandate while only 11% of children aged between 5 and 11 are vaccinated,” stated Alicia Andrews, the Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair. DEMOCRATS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
• We fully vaccinated 74% of adults compared to just 1% when we took office. This progress is particularly important in light of Omicron, because we know the unvaccinated are 17 times more likely to be hospitalized and 20 times more likely to die than those who’ve been vaccinated.
• We have 375 million at-home tests available per month now compared to 0 on the market at this time last year.
• 95% of schools are open right now compared to just 46% last year when the President took office.
Progress in our economic recovery:
• We have cut unemployment claims by 75% since last year.
• We have cut the unemployment rate from 6.4% to 3.9% -- a feat that forecasters didn’t expect us to reach for 4 more years.
• We have created a record 6.4 million jobs in the President’s first year in office compared to 9.4 million jobs lost in 2020.
