U.S. SUMMIT FOR DEMOCRACY: WORKERS', UNIONS' VITAL ROLE

At an official side event of the U.S. Summit for Democracy, union leaders, labor ministers and philanthropic organizations from around the world highlighted the role of worker voice and rights, and unions as fundamental components of democracy.

CLIMATE ACTIVISTS AT RISK AS MALDIVES FISHERS PROTEST

In a discussion led by UN Special Rapporteur Clément N. Voule, unions underscored their role in protecting climate activists, who are often workers whose livelihoods are being eroded by climate change. As an example, more than 600 fishers in the Maldives rallied to raise concerns about job health and environmentally damaging practices.

ESSENTIAL, INFORMAL WORKERS STILL IMPACTED BY PANDEMIC, BUT SMALL WINS CELEBRATED

Experts and union leaders outlined the increased violence and societal hazards that informal workers face during the pandemic, at a panel marking the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. Meanwhile, informal street and market vendors in Nigeria and Brazil saw wins.

E. EUROPEAN WOMEN IMPROVE WAGES & JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Prior to the Kazakhstan government's recent attacks on unions, a Solidarity Center partner there successfully advocated to abolish a list of jobs from which women have been legally barred since 1932. In Albania, following a 15-day work stoppage, 125 women improved their wages and working conditions through a new union contract.
