CRITICAL UPDATE

VOTING RIGHTS ALERT FROM AXIOS: Democrats take voting rights fight to state-level races

Late last night the Senate voted on the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – bills that would have protected voters from rampant voter suppression efforts across the country. But the bills failed after every single Republican senator voted no.

It’s sadly no surprise.

Republicans have been executing a coordinated attack on voting rights ever since Joe Biden was elected in 2020. In 2021 alone, Republican legislators introduced more than 440 bills that would make it harder to vote – especially for people of color. And in Florida, Texas, and Georgia Republican governors have signed some of the most extreme voter suppression bills in recent history.

But there is hope.

Across the country, Democratic governors are doing what Congress can’t: protect voters. Chip in $1 or whatever you can right now to elect Democratic governors and stop the Republican attack on voting rights.

Democratic governors are truly our last line of defense.

- In heavily gerrymandered Wisconsin, Governor Tony Evers is a brick wall against Republican voter suppression. Last year, he vetoed 6 BILLS that would have created unnecessary and damaging hurdles for Wisconsinites to participate in our democracy.

- In Nevada, Governor Steve Sisolak made mail-in voting permanent and expanded access to the polls.

- In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has worked to expand the vote and stop Republican schemes to suppress voter participation. In 2021, she vetoed 4 BILLS that would have perpetuated the Big Lie and made it harder for Michiganders to vote.

- And in Texas and Georgia, Democratic candidates Beto O’Rourke and Stacey Abrams are voting rights champions who have expanded voter registration and participation in their states and across the country. They’re running to defeat Greg Abbott and Brian Kemp, two of the worst Republican governors and architects of Jim Crow 2.0 voter suppression.

You can’t sit this one out.

Electing Democratic governors all across the country is the last chance we have to stop the GOP’s attacks on everything from voting rights to reproductive freedom. But it won’t be easy. Republicans will stop at nothing to regain the White House and lock Democrats out of power – they just have to stop enough voters from reaching the ballot box. We need reliable Dems like you to step up today and do your part to SAVE our democracy.

Here’s how: Our $25,000 24-hour goal is within reach, but we need 32 more Democrats from your city to chip in $1, or whatever you can, before midnight. Your gift will help defeat Republicans and elect Democrats dedicated to protecting your rights from GOP extremism.
