John --
Today, two Democratic senators and every Republican senator failed the American people and failed our Democracy.
These senators, elected to represent the people, had every opportunity to fight for our vote and protect Americans from the more than 500 voter suppression bills lawmakers have proposed and that some have even passed in 49 states attacking our freedom to vote.
Historically, voting rights have been supported on both sides of the aisle. In 2006, the Voting Rights Act passed 98 to 0 in the Senate with votes from 16 Republicans who still sit in the United States Senate today.
What changed? They are afraid of our collective voting power.
The American people showed up in record numbers in 2020 to elect leaders who should represent their values and best interests.
And our lawmakers chose their own political power over the people.
And while we will take some time and take a breath, we must persist in this fight because democracy cannot wait.
We know that saving our democracy has never been led by the people in power -- it’s been led by us, the people, and it starts in our communities. Thirty civil rights and voting organizations representing millions of Americans joined our Fight For Our Vote pledge so we can do everything in our power to register and turn out voters in the 2022 midterm elections.
Our priorities have not wavered. The obstruction in Congress is a setback, but the work remains rooted on the ground in our communities, in talking with our neighbors and making connections with one another. And that’s what we’ll continue to do.
Join us now -- check your own voter registration status, register to vote, and make sure your friends and family do the same. We’re in this fight together.
Thank you and you’ll hear more from us soon.
