Just about 158 years ago, Sacramento experienced a severe flood that left the city 30 feet underwater and needing to be entirely rebuilt. Since then, our region has continued to battle flooding and the threat remains serious.
Today, Sacramento is safer than ever, thanks to significant investments in modern water infrastructure. But, our fight against flooding is never over and there’s more we must do.
As the effects of the climate crisis become increasingly severe, our region will face more regular and widespread threats from extreme weather.
While natural disasters are inevitable, we can take steps to ensure our infrastructure is prepared when they hit. That’s why our member of Congress, Doris Matsui, took the initiative to control what will happen when extreme weather hits our city.
Congresswoman Matsui played a pivotal role in advancing funding to advance important flood infrastructure including a $1 billion state-of-the-art project. Matsui also secured one of only four new project approvals from the Administration to allow the groundbreaking of the West Sacramento Project, which provides full flood protection for West Sacramento’s 54,000 residents.
