John,
Tonight I was honored to deliver the State of the State address, highlighting the opportunities ahead and outlining a groundbreaking agenda to realize our bright future.
With a focus on increased transparency for taxpayers' hard-earned dollars, meaningful education reform, preservation of South Carolina's natural resources, and workforce opportunities for everyone, the best is yet to come.
South Carolina is in the strongest fiscal shape ever. We have the largest budget surplus, the largest rainy day reserve, and the lowest debt in our history. These milestones were no accident. By utilizing conservative policies and freezing government spending in 2020, we avoided cutting services, raising taxes, and borrowing money. Now, I am prepared to put more money in the pockets of our people by working to sign an income tax cut into law.
Some accomplishments over the past few years include: - Reduced the state unemployment rate from 5.6% in November 2020 to 3.7% in November 2021
- Created over $17 billion in new capitol investment since January of 2017
- Increased 4K enrollment by 47%
- Increased our state's economic output (GDP) 10% during the Covid-19 Pandemic and 26% over the last 5 years
One of the best ways to invest in the state's economy is through its people. After a successful launch to the Workforce Scholarships for the Future program, over 5,000 South Carolinians have been retained and employed. In addition, my office has launched an innovative job-seeking approach using technology to connect the workforce with even more opportunities in 2022.
Under conservative leadership, South Carolina is successfully competing in the global economy like never before and setting our people up for long-term success.
Reaching new heights takes teamwork. So, let us seize this moment by thinking big, by being bold and confident, and by making transformative investments. In this way, I believe we will set our State on a course that will provide the opportunity for prosperity, success, and happiness for generations of South Carolinians.
Sincerely,
Henry McMaster Governor of South Carolina
