The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy, but it’s being threatened by Republicans across the country.
GOP-controlled states have passed laws that make it harder for people of color, students, and the elderly to vote. They’ve done so in the name of election security, but we all know that it’s a targeted effort to disenfranchise voters.
Just this past week, Republicans in Congress held a unified front against common-sense voting reform. It’s a dangerous sign that they’re determined to pick their voters instead of allowing the voters to pick their representatives.
We just honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy with an important reminder that the fight for justice never ends. The literacy tests and poll taxes of the Jim Crow era haven’t become relics of history – they’ve evolved into the voter suppression tactics of today, like purges of eligible voters from states’ rolls, limiting voting hours, and punishing people trying to help voters standing in long lines on Election Day.
They were wrong then, and they are wrong now.
I’ve always voted to improve access to voting, and I’m not going to back down now. We won’t stop fighting until every person in this country has equal access to the ballot box.
