John — the Senate filibuster is allowing the political minority of this country to exercise a debilitating and negative form of control over our legislative process.

In short, it allows the minority to veto any priority of a majority of the American people. Indefinitely.

If we are to protect the right to vote, it will be necessary to amend or get rid of the filibuster.

It’s as simple as that.

We will never get 60 votes in the Senate for voting rights, since the GOP political strategy for over a decade has been one focused on disenfranchisement. Pinning our hopes on McConnell or Republican Senators coming around is a fools errand.

Eliminating the Senate filibuster is the least we can do to ensure fairer representation in Washington. And if we can’t get every Senate Democrat on the same page then I fear very much what it means for our country.

If we choose an archaic Senate rule, written nowhere in the Constitution, over the right to vote, then Republicans will continue to pass voter suppression laws, take over local elections offices, and steal the 2024 election at Donald Trump’s command. That’s the plain truth.

For any person to stand on the floor of the Senate — including Democratic Senators this week — and claim that the filibuster is “essential” to our democracy and say it encourages bipartisanship is clearly living in a different universe.

Because here’s the simple truth: the filibuster doesn’t foster bipartisan efforts — it only fosters minority rule.

That makes our divisions worse. And halts any sort of progress.

And right now, it’s tearing at our democracy. Derailing our perhaps last, best chance to protect voting rights and prevent voter subversion.

Senators can either recognize that fact, or get out of the way.

Voting is foundational to our democracy. Remove that foundation and everything else crumbles. We must protect voting rights – now – before it’s too late.

If a carve-out to the filibuster is good enough for Mitch McConnell to jam three justices on the Supreme Court, surely we can carve out an exception for the right to vote.

John, I’m personally asking for your $10 contribution to help us defend our House majority and elect a strong Democratic Senate majority that fights for voting rights and our democracy, not the filibuster. John — will you contribute $10 today?

The Senate must carve out an exception to the filibuster for voting rights, or eliminate the filibuster altogether. Whatever it takes. It’s time for some courage. Courage to protect our constitutional rights, and do what’s right.

Too much is at stake to do otherwise.
