LEAF's Gains in Equality

In this month's newsletter, we celebrate gains in the workplace, from our Gala celebrating 'Feminism at Work' to our litigation for pension equality!

--> In the case of Fraser v Canada, LEAF is going to the Supreme Court of Canada so that all women employees at the RCMP can receive a fair pension

--> In our Persons Day Gala, we brought together partners, sponsors, and community supporters to raise funds for our ongoing work in pay equity and pension equality

We share updates on our substantive equality efforts in our Bulletin and introduce you to our new Board of Directors!

LEAF is intervening at the SCC in Pension Equality Case

We have been granted leave to intervene before the Supreme Court of Canada in the case Fraser v Canada (Attorney General). LEAF will argue pensions should take into account the gendered reality of care giving obligations, so that all women employees can receive a fair pension.

LEAF was at Court advocating for fairness for sexual assault complainants

Our Executive Director and General Counsel Megan Stephens (left) and Counsel Lara Kinkartz of WeirFoulds LLP (right) at the Ontario Court of Appeal in R v Sullivan and R v Chan.

We advocated for s. 33. 1 of the Criminal Code to be upheld as constitutional. This section prevents the use of voluntary intoxication as a defence to assault-based offences including sexual assault.

Persons Day Gala 2019

Our annual fundraiser celebrated Feminism at Work and was a huge success! The Gala attracted more than 450 guests, with Bay Street partners, judges, labour leaders and government officials making an appearance!

With your support, we were able to fundraise to continue our work and to plan for the challenges ahead in bringing the substantive equality of women and girls to the forefront!

It’s such a crazy idea to think that less than a hundred years ago, we weren’t considered people. We need to keep thinking about what has come before so we can continue to advocate for the difficult problems that we still face.”

-  Megan Stephens, Executive Director and General Counsel at LEAF.
