For four years, Donald Trump flagrantly abused the power of the Oval Office. It's clear the current checks in place, including impeachment, are not enough. Tradition and norm are not enough. We need better laws in place that safeguard the integrity of the executive office no matter who holds the seat.
Congress must make reforms to ensure that the next president cannot abuse their office. The Protecting Our Democracy Act, does exactly that by increasing executive branch transparency and accountability. It puts reasonable limits on emergency powers, prohibits self-pardons, prevents interference at the Department of Justice, and much more.
The bill will root out corruption by preventing presidents from profiting from public office. It also protects our elections from foreign interference and codifies into law income tax disclosure for all major party presidential and vice-presidential candidates in a general election.
We must ensure that no president is above the law and restores balance across our government.

It’s been one year since the attack on our Capitol, and mounting evidence suggests a number of elected Republicans helped plan, promote, and excuse Jan. 6. The congressional commission continues their efforts to understand the attack and prevent it from happening again. But they’ve been continually stonewalled by Trump's allies who refuse congressional subpoenas, claiming executive privilege.
Presidents invoking executive privilege to skirt responsibility for their actions is not a new phenomenon. It happened in 1792 when George Washington refused to supply Congress with documents related to a military campaign against Native Americans. It happened during the investigation into the Watergate break-in, when Richard Nixon invoked executive privilege six times. And it's happening now as former President Donald Trump's allies continue to refuse subpoenas from the January 6 commission.

Just as Congress did after Watergate, we must again enact new laws and reforms to
strengthen our democratic institutions against future presidents – both Democrats and Republicans – who seek to undermine them. We must restore faith in the U.S. government and institutions. These reforms shouldn’t be partisan or controversial, and many of the proposals have had bipartisan support in the past.
The bill will prevent presidential abuses by:
-
preventing abuse of ardon power;
-
ensuring no president is above the law;
-
and enforcing the Foreign and Domestic Emoluments Clauses of the Constitution.
The bill will also strengthen accountability and transparency by:
-
enforcing congressional subpoenas;
-
reasserting congressional power of the purse;
-
strengthening congressional oversight of presidential emergency declarations;
-
and protecting whistleblowers and inspector general independence.
No matter their party, no president should be above the law. Sign and send the petition to the Senate: Pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act!
