Friend,
This afternoon, HB 5, the 15-week abortion ban proposed in the Florida Legislature, passed its first House committee on a 12-6 vote.
Obviously this is devastating news for reproductive rights in Florida and only underscores how important it is we elect pro-choice women to the legislature. Our endorsed women on the committee did an incredible job standing up for abortion rights and illuminating how dangerous this bill really is. Please join us in recognizing and thanking Ruth’s List alumni who fought HB 5 in committee today by calling, emailing, or tweeting words of appreciation:
As our champions reiterated today, all abortion bans are political, and have nothing to do with health or medicine. They only shame and stigmatize pregnant people, who deserve the freedom to make the medical decisions about their own bodies and lives — including when and whether to have an abortion.
“We’re about to strip away freedom from half of the people in Florida. There is no such thing as a reasonable abortion ban.” — Rep. Anna Eskamani
This bill poses an imminent threat to reproductive rights in Florida and it’s more urgent than ever that we have leaders speaking out against it.
As HB 5 continues to move through the legislature, we have to stay vigilant, and we have to rely on our leaders in Tallahassee to keep pressure on those who are moving it forward. We are so thankful to have strong women representing us every day.
