You don’t need me to tell you that managing a family in the COVID-19 pandemic is an uphill battle. Unpredictable weather, job market instability, school closings, and surging prices are the reality for most American families. Caretakers and children across the country need a lifeline.

Which is why Democrats passed the new, increased Child Tax Credit as a part of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan in 2021. We were excited when the checks proved extremely successful – hundreds of thousands of families have been able to meet their children’s needs because of this middle-class tax cut providing monthly checks.

But Republicans in Congress want to stop the checks altogether, and are blocking efforts to pass an extension. They play at being ignorant of the real stakes: the livelihoods of American families and their children.

These checks are a crucial way for our government to begin the work of fighting poverty further entrenched by COVID-19. Republicans want that to stop, no matter the cost to you.

This is an unacceptable stance in the face of so much preventable financial hardship.
