When it comes to voting rights legislation, you've likely read plenty, possibly too much, about the process — who’s up, who’s down, who’s talking to whom, who’s walking back what, and the like. It's all very frustrating.
What has largely been overlooked in political reporting is what is actually in the legislation. By demanding the passage of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, we're defending the bedrock of U.S. democracy: Free and fair elections.

The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act is landmark legislation that will set national standards for voting access to guarantee the freedom to vote, prevent voter suppression, and ensure safe, secure, and accessible elections for all. Highlights include:
- Expanding automatic voter and same-day registration, and setting a national standard for no-excuse vote by mail for every eligible voter;
- Requiring all 50 states to offer early voting periods for at least two weeks prior to Election Day, including on nights and weekends;
- Enhancing protections for disabled voters;
- Creating a less onerous national standard for states that have voter ID requirements;
- Prohibiting the dissemination of false and misleading information designed to dissuade eligible voters from casting a ballot;
- Improving election security by requiring post-election audits and voter verifiable paper records of a votes;
- Ending partisan gerrymandering;
- Creating a new formula to determine which jurisdictions with a history of voting discrimination must get approval before changing their voting laws or practices, a direct response to the Supreme Court's Shelby County decision;
- Strengthening the right for voters to sue to block voting laws and practices that are intentionally discriminatory or will yield discriminatory results, a direct response to the Supreme Court's Brnovich decision;
- Requiring that states with early voting place an early polling place on tribal lands, expanding who may deliver voting materials and ballots on tribal lands, and ensuring that states with a voter ID requirement accept tribal or federally issued ID.
The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act may be our last, best hope to protect upcoming elections. As Leader Schumer and pro-democracy Democrats in the Senate work to overcome Republican obstruction and nonsense fealty to bipartisanship, now is the time to redouble our efforts to defend democracy.
