The Senate is currently debating the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, a combination of the original Freedom to Vote and John Lewis Voting Rights Act.

This combined legislation will protect and expand the freedom to vote in America at a critical time. Hundreds of voter suppression bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country (including here in Michigan).

The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act is a transformational piece of legislation that will protect voting rights and expand access to the ballot. This legislation will:

- Make Election Day a federal holiday, removing barriers to voting for many working Americans
- Create online, automatic, and same-day voter registration
- Require a minimum of 15 days of early voting (including at least two weekends)
- Allow for mail-in voting and expand secure ballot drop boxes and online ballot tracking
- Restore voting rights to formerly incarcerated people
- Strengthen protections originally passed in the Voting Rights Act that have been watered down and weakened
- Protect against voter intimidation
- Stop voter suppression tactics like strict voter ID and purges of voter rolls
