John,
When I first ran for Congress in 2018, I campaigned on the promise that if I was elected, I would do things differently: I wanted to be in Congress to truly represent my constituents, to make their lives easier and better.
When I was sworn in, I was excited to make good on that promise. But I found that it wasn’t that simple. Yes, there was resistance from conservatives. But there were also antiquated rules and customs that didn’t serve any clear purpose besides stopping people like me from shaking up the status quo. And of course, there are the special interests–lobbyists, super PACs, and corporations who want to hold on to their profit and power at the expense of everyday Americans.
I quickly realized how important it is to have allies in Congress.
That’s why in the summer of 2020 I started Truth to Power, an organization dedicated to electing leaders who will stand up to corporate special interests and fight for equal rights, political and economic reform, a woman’s right to choose, gun violence prevention, and concrete action to fight climate change.
Truth to Power is a ‘Leadership PAC.’ This is a type of PAC that can only be started by a member of Congress, and Truth to Power is quite different from the corporate PACs you're used to hearing about. We’re funded by working people like you–our average donation is around $17. And the money we raise goes directly to the candidates I endorse. I only endorse candidates who I believe in, and I’m proud that we’re able to support their campaigns when they’re just getting off the ground (this is the MOST critical time for a new candidate’s fundraising).
As we gear up for the 2022 election cycle, I’m asking if you can split a donation between my campaign and Truth to Power. Our first round of endorsements is coming soon, and this is one of the most useful times to make a donation.
In 2020, Truth to Power supported first time candidates like now-Congressmen Jamaal Bowman and Mondaire Jones. Since joining me in Washington, they’ve been vocal partners in the fight for things like voting rights, legislation that actually addresses climate change, and lowering costs for families.
We’re just getting started, John. Help us gear up for 2022.
