Far-right Republican Senator Ron Johnson announced that he’s running for re-election, going back on his word that he wouldn’t be seeking another term in office.

Now, I’m not all that surprised by Ron Johnson’s dishonesty — he’s proven to be one of the leading spreaders of misinformation in the Trump era, on everything from election integrity to the coronavirus pandemic. What did catch my eye, however, was his rationale for wanting to remain in office.

According to Johnson, Democratic governance is why he’s chosen to go back on his word, because of “the disastrous policies [the Democrats] have already inflicted on America and the world.”

The way I see it, we need even more progressive policies and more progressive Democrats in the Senate who are willing to fight for them. And replacing far-right Republicans like Ron Johnson with progressives like my friend Mandela Barnes is a good place to start.

The Wisconsin Senate race is a prime opportunity not only to maintain our Senate majority, but to expand it even further. I could go on and on and on and on about Ron Johnson’s history of falsehoods and lies. His brand of politics continues to threaten the very fabric of our democracy. Who knows how much more damage he can cause given another six years?

I know the heart of Mandela Barnes, and that’s why I’ve been especially excited to support his campaign to unseat Ron Johnson and become Wisconsin’s next Senator. Mandela does not stand for the irresponsible politics that Johnson and Trump’s other cronies have weaponized as they cling to power, and that’s the type of fighter we’re going to need on Capitol Hill.

Sending Mandela to Washington isn’t just the smart choice, it’s the only choice. But since this race is currently deemed a toss-up, we can’t wait a moment longer to build the momentum we’re going to need to win this thing and send Ron Johnson packing.
