Over the last year, Republicans have latched themselves on to Donald Trump and weaponized his baseless lies of voter fraud to further their own political gain. And now, 33 laws restricting access to the ballot box have been passed in 19 states.
Our fundamental right to vote is the backbone of our democracy, and it’s critical that Congress act immediately to protect it.
Last week, the House passed the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act to protect voting rights and end discrimination at the ballot box. But the problem is, we need at least 10 Republican Senators to vote in favor of this bill to bypass the filibuster and put this critical legislation on President Biden’s desk.
Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have abused the filibuster time and again to halt progress that the majority of the American people want — without a vote or even a debate.
Well, the people of Wisconsin didn’t send me to Washington to sit on the sidelines while Republicans attack our right to vote in our state and across the nation.
So this week, I look forward to passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, and if we have to eliminate the filibuster to get this legislation across the finish line, then I’m all for that.
