Imagine you published a Bible quote on a social network and were accused by the Attorney General of spreading hatred. This happened to Päivi Räsänen, a Finnish Christian Member of Parliament who criticized her church on Twitter for supporting the LGBT movement's ideological demands and relied on the authority of God's Word as a Christian. The reaction of Finnish society was very intolerant. The Prosecutor General accused her of hate speech. This accusation is in fact absurd because it denies the right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Since 2019, Päivi has faced police interrogation on three occasions - the latest stemming from suspicion of “agitation against a minority group”. What we are seeing here is a dangerous precedent for freedom of speech, especially Christian free speech, throughout the Western world. Finnish parliamentarian and friend Päivi Räsänen is still under a legal attack for tweeting a bible verse and expressing her sincerely held beliefs -- beliefs I believe you and I share, along with hundreds of millions of Christians. Despite facing jail and ongoing persecution, Päivi has shown indomitable strength: “I cannot accept that voicing my religious beliefs could mean imprisonment. I do not consider myself guilty of threatening, slandering or insulting anyone. My statements were all based on the Bible’s teachings on marriage and sexuality,” she said. “I will not back down from my views. I will not be intimidated into hiding my faith. The more Christians keep silent on controversial themes, the narrower the space for freedom of speech gets.” In the next few days, I want to get at least 500,000 signed petitions in defense of this brave Christian woman.

So much so that the Prosecutor General of Finland, Raija Toiviainen, described the flood of support for Räsänen as “utterly exceptional, even alarming.” She even expressed concern that prosecutors working for her on the case might feel the pressure and back down. But despite her concern, Toiviainen stubbornly refused to see the reason. That’s why it’s my goal to drive support for Päivi Räsänen even higher and reach our goal of 500,000 petitions before her court date on January 24th. Mrs. Räsänen also receives every petition as a sign of support, and she is incredibly moved by your willingness to defend her.
