Our Latest Actions:
- Letters to Estée Lauder: On Tuesday, CfA sent letters to Estée Lauder informing the company of an employee’s inappropriate use of the company’s name in her role as the board chair of Obria Medical Clinics of Southern California, an anti-choice religious ministry masquerading as a healthcare group, and requesting that the company discipline the employee accordingly. - Ethics Complaint Against Florida State Rep. Scott Plakon: On Monday, CfA called on the Florida Commission on Ethics to investigate whether Florida State Representative David Scott Plakon violated the Florida Constitution and state ethics laws by failing to properly disclose information about his myriad business interests on his personal financial disclosure forms. - New Documents Released in CfA's #FOIAFriday Thread: Today, as part of CfA's most recent #FOIAFriday tweet thread on Twitter, CfA released new documents that were obtained via a FOIA request to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The FOIA request and documents concerned a problematic loan connected with U.S. Senator Mike Crapo's campaign committee. (Twitter Thread )

- Complaint Against Rep. Plakon: The Orlando Sentinel wrote about CfA's ethics complaint against Rep. Plakon. (Orlando Sentinel, 11.4.19)
- Google's Media Giving: The University of Chicago's ProMarket blog and the Columbia Journalism Review both wrote about CfA's recent report documenting Google's funding of news and journalism initiatives worldwide. (ProMarket, 10.23.19; Columbia Journalism Review, 10.25.19)
- Tech's Ties to U.S. Sen. Mike Lee: The New York Times wrote about the powerful coalition pushing back on the anti-tech movement. The New York Times mentioned CfA's recent post about how U.S. Senator Mike Lee went from being a tech critic to a tech ally, all while the tech industry was attempting to build a relationship with him and others in the conservative movement. What We're Reading:
- Google is acquiring Fitbit: Google announced last Friday that it is acquiring Fitbit, again renewing concerns about Google's size and influence. (The Verge, 11.1.19)
- Political Advertising on Facebook: Cornell Tech's Yaël Eisenstadt wrote about her experience working on political ads at Facebook and how the company profits from manipulation. (The Washington Post, 11.4.19)
- Local Politicians Need to Follow Campaign Finance Laws, Too: The Pittsburgh city ethics board fined Pittsburgh Councilwoman Darlene Harris more than $4,000 for campaign finance reporting violations. (Pittsburgh Post Gazette, 11.5.19)
