Last night, we learned that former mayor of NYC and multi-billionaire Michael Bloomberg may be running for president in the Democratic primary as a last ditch effort to stop Elizabeth Warren and her two-cent wealth tax.

Billionaires like Bloomberg, Bill Gates, and Leon Cooperman are brought to tears just imagining having to pay their fair share in taxes so that everyone can have single-payer health care, universal child care, and a quality K-12 public education.

That’s because they know their days of unchallenged influence over our democracy are numbered. And they’re willing to throw more of their fortunes on vanity campaigns in an attempt to defend the status quo.

But what we lack in billions, we gain in a grassroots people-powered movement that is ready to fight for big, structural change. Billionaires like Michael Bloomberg were never going to just go along with a wealth tax. They’ve enjoyed being part of the richest 0.0002% club and the access that level of unimaginable wealth has entailed for too long. It doesn’t even matter that Warren’s two-cent wealth tax won’t change their billionaire status, nothing scares billionaires more than having to relinquish their power to level the playing field for everyone else.

That’s why they are all having a public meltdown at even the idea of a progressive in the White House. And they’ll stop at nothing — whether that’s pouring their billions into Super PACs or running their own longshot vanity campaigns — to try and slow our momentum. That’s why it’s so important that we fight back now.
