Urgent: The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act goes to a vote soon. Tell your senator to pass this bill. |

Friend – The Senate is taking up the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act on the floor today. That means we have just a little time left to make sure they know what we expect of them: Please, message your senator immediately and tell them to vote "yes." This bill includes all of the crucial provisions to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act – legislation that will begin to root out voting barriers that discriminate against voters of color and protect our fundamental right to vote. And it is more urgent than ever that we ensure its swift passage this week – the week of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
ACLU Supporter, the backlash of anti-voter legislation that we witnessed after the 2020 election was massive, discriminatory, and utterly disturbing. Over 400 of these measures were introduced by state legislatures across the country in an unprecedented surge. Many of these bills were racially-motivated and blatant attempts to control who has access to the ballot and who does not. With the midterms on the horizon, the ACLU has been fighting relentlessly on all fronts – in the courts, legislatures, and across the states – to defend everybody's voting power. But now, Congress has a critical role to play. We've watched for weeks as the Senate moved to get voting rights legislation to the floor and now the moment is here. And if they pass this bill this week, it will be signed by the president and become law with sufficient time to protect the right to vote during the 2022 elections. With you in this fight, Bobby Hoffman |
