Today, we celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His ceaseless pursuit of justice in the face of harassment and discrimination inspired me to become a civil rights attorney and continues to inspire me to persevere in the fight to make our country more equal and just.
We are at an inflection point and we have the chance to decide: will we come together to carry on Dr. King's fight for civil and voting rights, or will we allow the dark forces to succeed.
We have many more tools than Dr. King had when he and so many others put their lives on the line to make sure every American could vote. Now, it’s on all of us who still believe in democracy to protect the right to vote and work to bend the arc of the moral universe towards justice.
I know it can seem like critical voting rights legislation will remain stalled in the Senate, but as Congressman John Lewis told me when he came to Dallas in 2018, we cannot let them steal our hope. We must pick ourselves up and continue to fight until we do.
As we honor Dr. King today, I hope you’ll join me in finding ways to carry on his efforts to encourage our nation to live up to its founding ideals. I’m so grateful to have you by my side in this work.
Sincerely,
Colin Allred
