AFSCME Family,
On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day we pause not simply to celebrate the man, but also the movement — the millions of Americans who stood with him to bend the moral arc of the universe toward justice. And we recommit ourselves to that movement today.
Decades after the passage of the Voting Rights Act, we are still fighting for equal access to the ballot box. As Dr. King once said, “So long as I do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote I do not possess myself.” And yet even today, we are seeing the passage of regressive, undemocratic voter suppression laws.
We honor Dr. King best not just by celebrating yesterday’s victories but by rededicating ourselves to today’s battles. We must protect and expand the rights of every American voter and knock down the barriers keeping people from having a voice and choosing their elected representatives. In the halls of Congress and in state legislatures around the country, we must promote laws and policies that make it easier to vote and stop those that make it harder.
As you take a moment today to honor Dr. King’s legacy, renew your commitment to voting rights by checking your voter registration status or registering to vote if you haven’t already.
Check your voter registration or register to vote here.
In solidarity,
Lee Saunders
