John,
As we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today, we must wrestle with the fact that the progress he gave his life for is not a sure thing -- that much is clear in today’s ongoing struggle for voting rights.
Across the country, Republican politicians have passed onerous voting restrictions that threaten to reverse the gains Dr. King and his contemporaries fought for. The NDRC’s chair, Attorney General Eric Holder, has said that “We haven’t seen a coordinated attack on voting rights like this since the days of Jim Crow.”
Here’s what we know: They cannot be allowed to succeed. So today, we must recommit ourselves to the full equality imagined by Dr. King. We must recommit ourselves to supporting legislation that will stop the racially motivated restrictions and protect voting rights -- namely, the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.
On this day, will you let NDRC know that you are recommitting to getting this bill signed into law by adding your name to our petition?
Thanks for all you do,
Team NDRC
