John:
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day – a day to honor and celebrate the legacy of an American hero. His activism and leadership was powerful – he ushered a movement for equality and justice in our country.
And while we celebrate his legacy today, we must take a moment to acknowledge that this work is far from finished. We have a long way to go in order to restore the power of the idea that we are all created equal.
In addition to having these important discussions on MLK Day, we also use today as a National Day of Service to give back to our community and take care of our neighbors.
This last weekend I asked my friends, family, and campaign supporters if they could spare any winter clothes, food, and other supplies to help our unhoused neighbors at the Poverello Center. And in true Montana fashion, they stepped up to help their neighbors who needed it - so much so that I’m having some trouble picking it all up!
Montanans always lend a helping hand if a neighbor needs it. Let’s face it, there’s not a lot of us under this great Big Sky, and if we don’t take care of each other, no one will!
And with the spike in COVID cases, coupled with the peak of winter upon us, all these generous donors and I knew our friends at the Poverello Center needed that helping hand today. We were happy to serve.
Just like Dr. King said, "The time is always right to do what is right." So today, I’m asking you to join me in taking part in the National Day of Service.
It doesn’t have to be a massive undertaking – whether it's stopping by a shelter or pantry in your community, or simply offering to shovel a neighbor’s sidewalk during the next snow storm, let’s come together as a community to remind each other that we are stronger when we work together.
If you’d like to share what you’ve done for the National Day of Service, I’d love to see it, and I know a lot of your fellow supporters would, too. Reply to my tweet so we can see!
Thank you,
Tom
