We must recognize the fierce urgency of now that Dr. King spoke so eloquently of, and recommit to breaking down barriers to progress.

John,

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his unparalleled fight for racial equality, civil rights, and voting rights in the United States. This year, as we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we must acknowledge that the barriers towards achieving his full dream remain high. We must recognize the fierce urgency of now that Dr. King spoke so eloquently of, and recommit to breaking down these barriers.

We are seeing systemic efforts across the country to suppress the right to vote – the very right that Dr. King inspired millions to march for. We cannot claim to honor Dr. King's legacy if we do not do everything in our power to pass voting rights legislation.

Despite the many challenges we still face at this defining moment for our country, I have hope. I have hope by reflecting on Dr. King’s dedication to his mission, his undying belief in peace, and his courageous message. And I'm reminded in particular of these words of his:

“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”

Today, I recommit to making his words a reality. I hope you will join me.

-Jennifer
