Everyone,
Today, I think of how Dr. King devoted his life to making real the promise of democracy for all Americans. As our country continues to grapple with the civil unrest over the systemic racism that still pervades our society, we see states emboldened to pass legislation that undoes the very progress for which Dr. King gave his life.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the heart and soul of the Voting Rights Act in 2013, state legislatures have seized the opportunity to further restrict the right to vote, introducing more than 400 voter suppression bills in 2021 alone. These widespread efforts to silence the voice of the people and roll back Dr. King's legacy serve as a reminder of what's at stake and what work there is left to do.
Dr. King inspired generations of civil rights activists and taught us, most importantly, to never stop pushing forward. As the Senate debated the John Lewis Voting Rights Act that would restore and strengthen parts of the Voting Rights Act, I thought of how Dr. King once said that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. It is up to us to put our hands on the arc and keep pulling it towards justice – together.
Thank you,
Tom
