Team,

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I hope you take a moment to remember Dr. King. Even better, I hope you are taking part in the day of service to honor Dr. King's legacy.

Dr. King famously said, "True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice."

Justice is never secured by sitting on the sidelines. Dr. King's Dream is still alive, but the work is unfinished. The task for all of us is to keep working toward a more perfect union. A nation where every American can vote without facing discriminatory barriers. A nation where we embrace the principle of equal pay for equal work. A nation where everyone has affordable health care. A nation where every person can live with dignity and where every person's civil rights are protected and guarded fiercely.

Dr. King said, "We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now."

No matter who you vote for, where you live, the color of your skin, or your financial wherewithal, we are in this together, team. Those of us who are in a position to speak up against injustice need to. Those of us who have the power, the time, and the privilege to fight for the rights of our fellow Americans need to.

Today, we remember a leader who was larger than life — whose words continue to be a guiding light in the darkest of times. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a reminder of what's possible when we refuse to sit quietly in the presence of injustice. I will keep pushing to form that more perfect union, and I am grateful to have you by my side.

It's an honor to serve you,

Derek
