John,

While in seminary school, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught and preached at Calvary Baptist Church in Chester, right outside of Philadelphia.

Four years after leaving Chester, at just 26 years old, he led the Montgomery Bus Boycott — igniting the civil rights movement.

Dr. King left behind a truly remarkable legacy, inspiring countless generations to continue his work — work that continues today as we fight for greater equity for Black Pennsylvanians and Americans, including by passing voting rights.

As a doctor, I saw firsthand just how different outcomes could be for two pregnant moms on the same shift, on the same floor of the same hospital, just because of the color of their skin. Yes, we’ve made significant progress, in large part thanks to the work of Dr. King, but many of the injustices and inequities he fought against persist today.

The wealth gap continues to grow. COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted people of color. And in dozens of states across the country, legislators are passing bills to disenfranchise people of color. It has to stop.

Dr. King said: “The time is always right to do what is right.” To achieve the future our children deserve, we need to have the courage to take on the tough battles, and never back down. Voting rights is one of those battles.

We must honor Dr. King’s legacy through bold action to pass voting rights legislation that ensures everyone can vote free from restrictive measures. Every American deserves equal access to the ballot box and the opportunity to exercise this fundamental right. And we cannot stop fighting until this is a reality.

Thank you for standing with me to help continue Dr. King’s legacy.

Val
