John,
Each year, on the third Monday in January, Americans honor Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy.
Today, as we celebrate the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr we must
deepen our commitment to protecting and strengthening the cornerstone of
our democracy, the right to vote, because it is under attack in cities and
states across the nation.
The time for voting rights legislation is NOW.

and pass voting rights legislation that will take on voter suppression in
all forms?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s efforts to fight for equality are with us
today as grassroots organizations across the nation fight racism, serve
our communities, and work hard to make sure that all people have equal
access to the ballot box.
Throughout his life, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for equality,
justice, civil rights, and the fundamental democratic right to vote.
Sadly, systemic discrimination in our voting systems threatens that right
even to this day, with countless Americans still facing tremendous hurdles
when simply trying to participate in our democracy.
Ending the filibuster and passing voting rights legislation will make it
easier for Americans to vote. Together, we can eliminate institutional
barriers to voting, including cumbersome voter registration systems,
disenfranchisement, and limited voting hours.

protecting voting rights to ensure that all Americans, regardless of race,
truly have the right to vote?

As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the profound impact that
he has had on our country, we must remember those who have fought and died
to make his vision a reality.
Each of us has a role to play to ensure that everyone can participate
freely and fairly in our shared democracy.
Thank you for all that you do,
- Nelson
