Jack, as a young Black man in America during peak racial segregation, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a brave pioneer, leading the civil rights movement.
Dr. King was a fearless and courageous champion when it came to fighting for voting rights – I am grateful to be following in his footsteps by fighting for our voting rights right here in New Mexico.
I will cherish his contribution to our democracy. His work solidified the fact that everyone in our country has the right to vote.
As we celebrate and honor his legacy today, a couple of weeks ago, we also remembered the lives lost on the January 6th insurrection in the very same month he was born. The insurrection was not only an attack on our Capitol, but a direct attack on our democracy. We must honor Dr. King’s legacy by continuing his great work in the democratic principle of voting. It is your constitutional right to be heard.
Dr. King will never be forgotten – certainly not by me. I can only hope I accomplish a teaspoon of what he did for democracy in America.
In solidarity,
Maggie Toulouse Oliver
