Friend,

Today, we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To say Dr. King was an exceptional leader would be an understatement. The Civil Rights Movement needed a selfless, brave, and passionate leader like him on the frontlines of the fight for equality, and he put his life on the line for what he believed in.

While we’ve made tremendous progress in the past half century, the fight for justice is far from over. Healthcare and housing inequality, environmental racism, and bigotry still persist to this day.

And just this weekend, we saw a hateful attack against the congregation of Beth Israel Temple in Colleyville, Texas.

Fortunately, all the hostages who were inside the synagogue have been rescued and are safe. I spoke with members of Rabbi Walker’s family here in his home state of Michigan. I let them know I — and our entire community — are here for them.

But more than just our thoughts, we must also take action to put an end to the anti-semitism and violence against the Jewish community we have seen steadily increase in recent years. This has to stop.

So today on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let’s resolve to continue organizing and working toward a more perfect union with the same courage and conviction that he did.

Thank you for doing your part,

Haley
